The Brother’s Blue

Old-Timey Blue Country String Grass Music!

A Finger Lakes born trio of songwriters that flirt with Bluegrass, Celtic, and swampy Cajun country sounds as they weave three-part harmonies over a tapestry of fiddle, banjo, and guitar virtuosity. Featured as emerging artists both by the Greyfox Bluegrass Festival and the Golden Link Folk Singing Society, their performance is well-rounded and polished like river rocks, always reflective of the hills and lakes they came from.  Their tight huddle around the microphone and contemplative songs leave a lasting impression on the lucky listener.

As teenagers, Benny Haravitch and Matthew Sperber began learning songs together on an acoustic guitar they brought on bicycle trips throughout the Finger Lakes region.  Growing up together in Honeoye, NY, the boys came to appreciate playing music early on.  Matthew made his way to Buffalo, NY where he met Irish fiddler Charlie Coughlin, and the trio was forged. Together they spread the joy of fiddle tunes, the strength of community, and the living tradition of folk music.

Eli Flynn Live

Audiences are well acquainted with Eli Flynn as a current member of the bands Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Upward Groove, and The Able Bodies, and on the stylistically diverse “Running With Scissors” — his debut solo album —there’s never a dull moment. “Easier” demonstrates Flynn’s prowess as a rock vocalist as he snarls his way through the melody with a limber range and soulful swagger that recalls the aplomb of Gavin DeGraw on his 2003 breakthrough album “Chariot “Every Word Is a Mountain” borrows from The Able Bodies playbook of danceable ’90s pop that grooves, but mixed metaphors about “my love in a sling” and “broken logic hanging from a silver chair” distract from the song’s natural charms. Flynn’s words regain focus on the very next track. “There was a time in the beginning when devotion kept me spinning but that time is past,” he sings with calm wisdom on “Hell in a Handbasket.” Slide guitar and a Fender Rhodes organ sound meld over a loping tempo that flows like a lazy river: “Have you ever met your demons, took their advice without reason? Well I have.” Throughout the record, occasional wisps of soul and funk refresh the natural charm of Flynn’s charismatic tunes. The music was entrusted to sound engineers Lincoln All and Aaron Lipp, whose supervision of mixing and mastering, respectively, gives the album its polish.

Aaron Lipp Father’s Day

Aaron grew up in a musical family and began playing piano at age four.  Throughout childhood, he picked up other instruments such as drums, bass, guitar, trumpet, organ, harmonica, and more. Coming from a musical family he was surrounded by all types of music from a very young age. From folk and bluegrass to rock and blues, these early years were the foundation of a long musical journey. Later in May 2006, Aaron joined Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, a local Rochester Original Roots Reggae and Dub band. He played a multitude of instruments for the group including Rhodes, Clavinet, Hammond B3 Organ, slide guitar, harmonica, wurlitzer, lap steel, guitar, and banjo. In a span of six years. During this era, Panda put out two live albums - "Live Up! Vol.1 & 2", and two studio albums - "In These Times" & "Country." Giant Panda toured constantly all over the country logging nearly half a million miles on the road. Panda later released "Steady" and "Bright Days" which feature Aaron on many instruments and harmony vocals. Throughout these years on the road and little time at home, Aaron dove heavily into Old Time and Bluegrass music, learning the traditional practices of clawhammer banjo, bottleneck slide guitar, dobro, flatpicking guitar, blues harp, old time fiddle and upright bass.  Sacred steel music on the Hammond Organ and Lap Steel guitar was heavy in motion for the next musical touring adventure.
